The gold clock: Asia coil, London raid, COMEX expansion
From 00:00 to 06:30 UTC, XAUUSD often sits in a $6 to $12 box while Tokyo and Sydney mark the overnight high and low. Frankfurt and London then sweep those rails between 07:00 and 08:30 UTC. Traders who fade the first break of 2650.00 or 2675.00 are usually selling the stop run, not the trend. The honest expansion often starts only after a closed M15 reclaim of the swept handle.
COMEX cash open (12:20 to 13:30 UTC) repeats the raid against the London range. That window, plus the 12:00 to 16:00 UTC overlap, is where most of the 280 to 450 pip daily ATR is printed. After 16:30 UTC the book thins. After 21:00 UTC the daily CME rollover can double or triple the 1.2 to 2.5 pip working spread, so a 25-pip scalp stop is already gone to friction.
Spread tax on a $10 gold pip
One standard lot is 100 troy ounces. The industry gold pip is 0.10, so each pip is $10.00. A 2.0 pip spread is $20.00 round-trip per lot before price moves. During the 21:00 to 22:00 UTC roll that same lot can pay $80.00 or more just to be in the market. Scalps that look legal on a 1.5 pip quote are not legal on an 8-pip quote.
If you start free on Venasri, set a spread gate that blocks gold when the live quote exceeds about 0.5× M15 ATR or 3.0 pips, whichever is tighter. That single filter removes the rollover tax and the pre-CPI ghost quotes that print on thin books.
News windows that turn a 69-pip stop into a gap
US CPI, NFP, and FOMC reprice 10-year real yields, and gold is the inverse of those yields. A normal day is 280 to 450 pips ($28 to $45). A 12:30 UTC red-folder candle can travel 80 pips in four minutes with no bid on your side. On a 1.45 lot ticket that is already past $1,000 of intended 1% risk.
Black out 30 minutes each side of those stamps. If you already hold gold into the print, flatten or cut to a swing-size 0.45 lot with a 140 to 220 pip stop only if overnight holding is allowed. Park that rule on Venasri Equity Guard so a COMEX wick cannot spend the leftover 1.5% of a 5% daily limit.
Session checklist that belongs on the ticket, not in memory
Trade gold when the session is London or the New York overlap, the spread is under 3 pips, H4 EMA50 slope agrees, and the stop sits beyond a $25 or $50 handle plus 1.5× M15 ATR. Reject the click if 12:30 UTC US data is inside 30 minutes or if gold has already traveled 200 pips from the Asian mid. The range is spent.
Load those gates on the AI Pre-Trade Checklist. Manual Trade Guard should attach a 55 to 90 pip intraday stop the instant the ticket fills. Gold pays when the structure is slow. It confiscates when you negotiate with the first COMEX wick.
