North America is the Loonie session; London is a warm-up
Prime flow is 12:30 to 16:30 UTC, when both US and Canadian cash desks are open and oil is live. That window holds most of the 55 to 85 pip daily ATR. London can trend the pair, but the defining prints are North American.
Asia is a coil. Spreads stay near 0.3 to 0.8 pips on a good broker, yet depth is thinner and the 10 to 15 pip scalp stop is easy to run before 12:30 UTC. Map 1.3500, 1.3550, and 1.3600 overnight. Trade them after the dual-release dust settles, not into it.
Pip value is about $7.35, not $10
One lot is 100,000 USD. Quote is CAD, so pip value sits near $7.35, not $10.00. A 0.5 pip spread is about $3.68 per lot. Traders who size USDCAD like EURUSD at 5.00 lots on a 20-pip stop are already overweight before oil moves.
If you start free on Venasri, use 5.44 lots at a 25-pip stop for 1% of $100,000 (1000 / (25 × 7.35)). Evaluation default is 2.72 lots. Venasri Equity Guard should flatten if a 12:30 UTC dual print already spent 3% of the day.
The same-second jobs print and the EIA oil kick
When US jobs beat and Canada misses, or the reverse, USDCAD can travel 80 pips with no pullback. A 20-pip stop is not tight risk management on that candle. It is a scheduled donation. Bank of Canada decisions add a second scheduled shock.
EIA crude inventories at 14:30 UTC (10:30 AM ET) reprice WTI, and USDCAD often follows because the pair is inverse oil. If you are already short USDCAD as an oil proxy, the EIA candle is your event risk. Black out 30 minutes around 12:30 UTC dual data, BoC, and EIA.
Loonie session gates after the 12:30 UTC stamp
Trade 12:45 to 16:30 UTC after the dual release, or skip the first 15 minutes entirely. Require spread under 0.8 pips, oil not fighting your direction, and a stop beyond the 00 or 50 figure. Reject a USDCAD ticket if you already have a full WTI book in the same direction as the implied oil bet.
Tick those gates on the AI Pre-Trade Checklist. USDCAD pays after both labor reports are known. It bills the trader who wants to "be in" at 12:29 UTC.
